Split filter cleaning instructions

It doesn't take long for those air filters to get all dusty and grimy. Clean these filters fortnightly, by vacuuming the dust off. Many people only clean these and put them back in all year round. These filters are the perfect place for allergens and dangerous bacteria to collect and grow. It's very important to clean air conditioner filters about 2 or 3 times a year with more than just a vacuum.

Things You'll Need

  • Washable air conditioner filter
  • Vacuum
  • Mild detergent
  • Water Tub or pan
  • Vinegar

Process

  1. Remove the washable air conditioner filter from the unit and vacuum off any built up dust and grime. It will be impossible to get it all off but just get as much off as possible.
  2. Clean with warm water and a mild soap solution and rinse.
  3. Find a pan, basin or tub that is big enough to submerge the filter. It doesn't have to be very deep as long as the filter will be completely submerged.
  4. Mix a solution of 1/2 vinegar and 1/2 water in the container. This will kill and remove any allergens and harmful bacteria that has collected on the filter. Water alone will not do that.
  5. Submerge the air conditioner filter into the cleaning solution and allow it to soak. An hour should be plenty long enough if the filters have been cleaned on a regular basis. If not, leave the filter in the solution for several hours.
  6. Lift the filter out of the liquid and drain. Do not rinse.
  7. Allow the filter to dry and place it back into the air conditioner.
